Tecta Zero Builds Green Roof Garden

Cincinnati – The Rothenberg Academy, with the help of the Over-the-Rhine Foundation, is building a rooftop learning garden for its students atop this historic Cincinnati public school.  Tecta America Zero Company is installing the pavers for this project.

Each teacher at the academy has a garden bed and every student will have their own personal space in the beds.  The director of the rooftop garden, Bryna Bass, spoke about the unique garden and how it will be used.

“This garden is so unique to this school being on the roof of this school and every classroom will have an opportunity to come up onto the rooftop on a weekly basis or however often a teacher wants to bring them up there to really work in the garden and grow either flowers or vegetables or even use it as a laboratory.

The Over-the-Rhine Foundation will host, “A Mid-Summer Night’s Gala” Friday, June 27th, to raise more money for the garden.  OTRF board member Pope Coleman will be honored during the event for his contributions to the foundation and the rooftop garden project.

Project Description & Details

Mercy Health Partners has created a new hospital on a 65 acre site located in Green Township on the west side of Cincinnati, Ohio. The sustainable site plan features low energy LED site lighting, a prairie, bioretention areas, and thousands of native plants. A 2.5 acre green roof is located above mechanical and surgical rooms and two patient towers rise four stories above the green roof offering healing views for patients and visitors.

The green roof is primarily an extensive green roof planted with a mixture of 50,000 sedum plants of four varieties. Swirling across the green roof are intensive berms that mound to 30” high on which larger grasses and perennials grow recalling the rolling hills of Ohio’s ancient prairies. Prairie grasses number 1,300 plants and they include Little Bluestem and Prairie Dropseed. Over 12,500 perennials were installed including Allium, Milkweed, Pinks, Rudbeckia, Monarda, Liatris, and Obedient Plant. These perennials bloom for a number of weeks from spring to early fall and display a range of colors from white, yellow and orange to pink, red, and purple.

GreenRoof.com Project of the Week: Northern Kentucky University Griffin Hall 8/19/13

Northern Kentucky University’s Griffin Hall houses the College of Informatics, a discipline that merges three different departments: Business Informatics, Communication and Computer Science. Once certification is officially received from the United States Green Building Council, Griffin Hall will represent NKU’s first LEED-certified building with LEED Silver.

Among many other features, NKU also installed a green roof above the Informatics Commons space and the bank of four classrooms closest to the Student Union, covering approximately 23% of the total building roof area. Designed by Vivian Llambi and Associates and installed by Tecta America Zero company and Green City Resources, the green roof’s bold elliptical lines, which are embodied by lightweight gravel vegetation-free zones contained by aluminum edging, echo the elliptical motif of the dynamic architecture of the building and the pedestrian space of the new West Oval below. A Sika Sarnafil membrane was used and rooflite® provided the 8" deep growing media and pathways with lightweight aggregate.

Founded in 1929, Tecta America Zero Company is in its third generation of Wolf Family Management, serving the Greater Cincinnati area including Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Our services include installations of all major roofing systems, full-service roof maintenance, and architectural sheet metal work in the commercial, residential and industrial markets.

In 2002, Zero Company joined Tecta America to tap into the strengths of the nation’s largest roofing contracting firm.

Jonathan Wolf, President
Jonathan is a 3rd generation roofing contractor and has been employed full-time at The Zero Company since 1992. He began performing estimating, sales, and project management duties in 1988 as a summer intern while attending Washington University in St. Louis. In 1992, Mr. Wolf graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) and a minor in Psychology. Jonathan has been cross trained in both Commercial and Residential Roofing and has filled the roles of Vice President of Sales and Vice President of Operations during his tenure with the company. In 1996, Mr. Wolf was named President.

While joining Tecta America in 2002 was clearly the company's watershed event under Mr. Wolf's leadership; he believes that the implementation of a company wide drug testing program in 1995 and the hiring of a full time Safety Director that followed are his biggest and most meaningful contributions to the company and all employees.

Mr. Wolf is a member of the Tecta America President's Council and has served on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Roofing Contractor's Association (ORCA,) the Board of Directors for the Jewish Family Service of Greater Cincinnati, and was a Big Brother Youth Mentor.

Jim Stark, joined The Zero Company in January 2004 as operations manager. Before coming to Zero he served as President of a Nashville, TN based roofing company. He brings fifteen years of experience starting as a sheet metal foreman, superintendent and project manager. His current duties for Zero include personnel management, customer service, project coordination, safety compliance and quality control.

Matt Gennett, Senior Project Manager

He was promoted through his previous company from Foreman to Project Manager where he traveled around the country for a large contractor out of Michigan running large commercial remodels. He finished a degree in IT from Cincinnati State in 2006 and then he finished a degree in business from Xavier University in July 2008 all while working full time. Matt speaks Spanish fluently.

Sherri Hausman, Service and Maintenace Manager
Sherri Hausman, joined The Zero Company in 2009 as Service Department support. Before coming to Zero she lived in Tampa, FL working in finance. Sherri has an Associate Degree from Antonelli Art Institute and previously worked at Macy’s Department Store as a Visual/Merchandise Manager.
